Bangalore: Dassault Systemes SA is introducing a program promote the use of its design tools among Indian artisans that make jewelry, the company announced on Thursday. |
Artisans will be trained on using Dassault Systemes' CATIA software, a PLM (product lifecycle management) product for digital product definition and simulation, Bernard Charles, president and chief executive officer of Dassault Systemes, told reporters. |
The company has partnered with the Government of Karnataka and an educational institution to set up centers where artisans can train on the tools, as well as design centers where they can use the tools to make jewelry. The artisans will be charged a nominal fee for the training and use of the design facilities, Charles said.

Dassault Systemes, based near Paris, develops PLM application software and services. It customized its CATIA software for use by the jewelry industry, and is also building a repository of knowledge specific to the industry that will be made available to the artisans, Charles said. |
The company also plans to work on a Web site that will enable customers
worldwide to get jewelry custom-made to their designs in India, Charles
said.

The total investment in the program is about Rs 4.5 crore (US$1 million), with the Karnataka government providing some of the funds, and Dassault Systemes contributing the software for the initial stages of the program. "Our revenue will be from sale of software for these training and design centers as the program picks up," Charles said.
|
Dassault Systemes plans to set up similar programs for the jewelry industry in
other countries. "The jewelry industry worldwide is still very much driven by
artisans," Charles said. With this program, artisans will be better able to
realize the value of their contributions to jewelry that is traded, he
added. |
Dassault Systemes has 584 staff in India, of which about 80 percent work on
software development. The company plans to increase its development staff as
well as staff at its marketing operation in India, Charles said. The country is
the fourth largest market for Dassault Systemes in Asia, after China, Japan, and
Korea, he said.
